A COUNCIL is to make its land harder to access for unauthorised traveller camps.

Weymouth Town Council outlined the action it intended to take after groups of travellers moved onto land at Littlemoor and at Lodmoor County Park.

At the weekend, five caravans were parked up on the events area of the country park, while a caravan moved on to land near Louviers play area in Littlemoor.

A separate group were on the park and ride site but have since left.

Police told the Echo earlier in the week that officers from the local neighbourhood policing team were liaising with the landowners and partner agencies.

Weymouth Town Council has now said in a statement: “We are aware of the issues and we are working with our partners to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

"At the same time, within the office, we are conducting a full audit of our assets and will be carrying out target hardening work to make our sites harder to enter without authorisation. However, we need to ensure that we maintain emergency and operational access and make sure the public can still enjoy our lovely parks and gardens. We are also pursuing action against those individuals that caused criminal damage to some of our sites.

"Please be assured that the council takes this issue extremely seriously and is fully committed to resolving the matter both in the short and long term.”
