A scene of destruction greeted emergency crews called to an early hours car smash early today.

Rescuers said a car was left severely damaged after it hit a wall, a bus stop sign and a lamppost in St Andrew's Road, Bridport.

Miraculously, no-one injured.

The driver has been arrested and is being quizzed by police about the incident.

Bridport Fire Station sent crews to the incident to assist police and paramedics. It was reported the vehicle, a Citroen C4 registered to a local keeper, was smoking at the scene.

The team said: "For our eighth call-out of the week we were mobilised at 2am to a single vehicle road traffic collision along St Andrew's Road.

"On arrival crews found a vehicle heavily damaged after colliding with a wall, a bus stop sign and lamppost.

"No one was trapped in the vehicle.

"Thankfully, due to the late hour, nobody was waiting at the bus stop, the roads were quiet and pavements free of pedestrians."

Dorset Police said they were called at just after 1.50am.

It is understand the crash happened at the north end of the A3066 St Andrew's Road near the junction with Knightstone Rise.

A police spokesman said: "It was reported as a vehicle into a wall. It was a single vehicle road traffic collision.

"The fire service was also called as there were reports of smoke coming for the vehicle.

"There were no injuries and the vehicle had to be recovered. The local authority were called as there was fuel and other fluids on the road.

"The driver has been arrested on suspicion of committing road related offences."
