Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn will return to speak at this weekend's Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival.

The Leader of the Opposition, who has a history in the trade union movement and is a long time supporter of the festival, has been a regular speaker at the event over the past few years.

Other speakers will include TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady, TUC president Mark Serwotka, Shadow Education Minister Angela Rayner, Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs David Drew, and Shadow Minister for Labour Laura Pidcock.

TUC Regional Secretary of the South West Nigel Costley said: "This year’s programme is more varied than ever before, truly reflecting the passion and diversity of the trade union movement.

"The event goes from strength to strength, with many people finding it recharges their batteries for the struggles they face at work and in their communities.”

"Trade unions are there to provide support in the bad times of peoples’ lives, so it’s fitting we’re also there for the good times, such as Tolpuddle."

The Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival celebrates the legacy of six nineteenth century agricultural labourers who were arrested and convicted for swearing an oath as part of a labour society.

The backlash against their conviction is credited with starting the trade union movement in Britain.

The festival will feature music, stalls, workshops and discussions on topics including climate emergency, industrial change, fighting racism, migration policy, arts education and abuse at work.

Internationalism will also be on the agenda, and there will be discussions on Germany, Colombia, Cuba, Sudan, Western Sahara, Italy, Palestine and Turkey.

Performers will include Fairground Attraction singer Eddi Reader, indie rock band Holy Moly and the Crackers, The Wood Burning Savages and many more.

A wide range of food and drink will be on offer for festival attendees.

There will also be the traditional laying of a wreath at the grave of James Hammett - one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, and the only one to return to the village after their arrest.

This year's festival will take place from July 19 to July 21 with the main rally day on the Sunday.
