A cornfield which became ablaze is believed to have been started maliciously.
A fire started at a cornfield on Bradford Road in Sherborne (14/07/2019).
Sherborne Fire Station was called shortly before 1am on Sunday.
A spokesman for the fire service said: “Two appliances from Sherborne and a L4T off roader from Crewkerne were mobilised to a fire in the open, more information was given to the crews en route established that this was a cornfield fire.
“On arrival crews found approximately 50 square meters of stubble and straw alight, crews initially got to work with beaters to contain the fire, and on arrival of Sherborne’s second appliance, two hose-reel jets were used to extinguish the fire.
“The rest of the field was thoroughly checked by Crewkerne’s appliance for any further fire or hotspots.
“This fire was believed to be malicious with no other signs of ignition at the scene. Fortunately, this didn’t develop, and we were able to act quickly but always remember, if you see a fire the countryside, report it immediately to the fire and rescue service.“Early detection can prevent it from escalating into a large wildfire incident.”
