A crop fire that was spreading fast due to high winds sparked an alert.

The fire took place in a 15 acre field at Cheselbourne. The fire service received the call at 3.48pm this afternoon.

Crews from Dorchester, Bere Regis, Yeovil, Weymouth, Blandford, Poole, Sturminster Newton, Wimborne and Maiden Newton all attended the scene, and four pumping appliances, four heavy off road appliances, two 4x4 Landrovers, a water carrier and a command support unit were used to tackle the blaze.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "Crews worked hard to prevent the fire from spreading to a neighbouring field, and had the fire surrounded by 16:56. The fire was extinguished using 4 hose reels and the capabilities of the 4x4 off road vehicles."

There was also one small shed involved in the fire.

The electricity board also attended to ensure that the nearby power lines were safe.
