The second instalment of a fun new health initiative taking place in Weymouth is set to be launched.

Three new orienteering courses have been set up in Lodmoor Park following the success of the first launch event at Nothe Gardens in April.

Families are invited to head along and have a go at orienteering on Sunday, July 21 between midday and 2.30pm.

Anyone with a smart phone can download the Oriento app to guide them around the courses and publish their scores at the end, but maps will also be provided on the day of the event.

The orienteering scheme was officially launched in spring, and is inspired by the hugely popular Beat the Street game which was a hit in the town in 2018. Weymouth Town Council, Dorset Council, Public Health Dorset, Wimborne Orienteers and the Beat the Street team all joined forces to launch the exciting new feature.

Councillor Laura Miller, Dorset Council cabinet member for adult social care and health, said: "Since Beat the Street we have been working with partners to see how we can keep the momentum going and help people get out and about in their communities.

"Orienteering is a great activity for everyone young and old to try and I’m looking forward to doing the courses with my kids. The courses at Lodmoor Country Park and Nothe Gardens are free and available to do all year round and anyone can visit anytime."

At the Lodmoor launch event, the Friends of Lodmoor Country Park will also be hosting their annual jam/sandwich picnic. Chairman of the Friends group Dinah Ellis said she is looking forward to seeing people enjoying the free orienteering after is has been launched by the Weymouth Town Council deputy mayor at 12.15pm.

She said: "This is another super permanent addition to our park activities, suitable for all ages and abilities. People can treat it as a competition or just make their exploration of the park even more interesting.

Everyone is invited to bring a picnic and, if they want, an 'unplugged' instrument, so we can have a go at making music while we eat alongside the orienteering base."

Once the event is over, explorers can borrow a map from Lodmoor Pitch and Putt, 5J’s Café, Weymouth Sea Life Park, Leisureranch, Sandworld or The Lodmoor Brewers Fayre. The map can also be download from Wimborne Orienteers’ website at wimborne-orienteers.co.uk
