Hurdling off pier is not a moral act
Last Sunday, a group of young people decided to jump off the Pleasure Pier in Weymouth before assaulting the police. This is a shameful action where people obviously haven’t learnt from their mistakes.
A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland police said: "We are aware that jumping from the pier may appear to be fun. However, it is prohibited by local by-laws due to it being dangerous and it also disrupts the harbour. We will be working closely with the Harbour Master to prevent further calls. Parents are encouraged to speak to their children about the dangers of this activity and asked to support us.”
Hurdling off a pier is yet another impetuous act committed by young people, so the stereotype of young people being thoughtless and stupid is supported. However, you shouldn’t expect young people to sit and obey – they need to make their own experiences and learn from their own mistakes. This may be ‘the hard way of learning,’ but it is also the most realistic. However, I am not to say that this couldn’t have been avoided. Your own life is more important than a reckless couple of minutes of ‘fun’. Abusing a police officer is inexcusable – I cannot understand the reason for this ridiculous action. It adds to the indecency of the coastal town, making it an undesirable place to live and visit.
