A Weymouth resident has said she is 'heartbroken' at the prospect of losing a nearby field to a housing development.

Devon and Dorset Properties Ltd has plans to create twelve houses and ten flats in a field between Spa Road and Roman Road in Weymouth.

The developers held a drop in meeting to allow members of the public to see the details of the development, as well as ask any questions and share any thoughts.

At the meeting, concerns were raised regarding the location of the development and the impact it will have on the surrounding land.

Weymouth resident Jane Healy, who lived right next to the development site, said: "I have strong objections to it. We use the field a lot. We use it for recreation - children play in it.

"I will be objecting to the sale of the land. I welcome the opportunity to come and communicate with the developer and how open the developer is.

"I am heartbroken that this lovely field is going to be destroyed."

Within this new development, six flats have been designated as affordable homes to be sold to first time local buyers.

This housing scheme aims to offer the flats to first time local buyers at 70 per cent of market value, which would subsequently be sold at the same rate to other first time local buyers when an occupant chooses to sell it.

Raymond McIntyre, chairman of Devon and Dorset, said: "This is a method we have used before and is very successful in helping young people gain access to the housing market.

"We have endeavoured to follow the existing local character as far as possible, while having to allow for modern living."

The land on which the properties are due to be developed is council owned.

Mr McIntyre said that he appreciates some concerns might be raised.

He said: "Generally speaking, members of the public are very concerned about social housing. It has a stigma. This is not social housing, it is very affordable."

Public comments on the application can be made until Tuesday, August 6.
