AS a brief response to Mr.Tempest’s letter (19th July) a search of several dictionaries for “referendum” comes up with essentially the same definition each time, namely “A general vote by the electorate on a single political question which has been referred to them for a direct decision”.
No mention of the word “advisory” anywhere as far as I can see.
Perhaps some confusion with petition - a written request (signed by a large number of people) for action on a particular matter?
That might just be regarded as “advisory” .
