Dorset's best and worst performing GP surgeries – as voted for by patients – have been revealed.

The results of the annual GP Patient Survey have been published.

Residents were asked for their opinion on a variety of elements with practices, from booking appointments, waiting times, out-of-hours services and the quality of care given.

Across Dorset 23,255 surveys were handed out to patients and 10,419 were completed and returned.

Puddletown Surgery topped the list with 100 per cent of patients rating the surgery as good, followed by Bute House in Sherborne and Corfe Castle surgery, both at 99 per cent.

Charmouth Medical Practice, and Queens Avenue Surgery in Dorchester, both have a 98 per cent overall satisfaction rating, while Cross Road and Dorchester Road surgeries in Weymouth, as well as Fordington surgery in Dorchester, all have a rating of 97 per cent.

Overall, practices in the Dorset CCG recorded a 87 per cent positive satisfaction rating, four per cent above the national average, but two per cent down on the county’s performance last year.

The only two surgeries in the Dorset Echo circulation area o fall below the national average of 82.9 per cent were Barton House Surgery in Beaminster (75 per cent) and Portland's Royal Manor Health Care (77 per cent).

The lowest ranked practice overall was the Bournemouth-based Alma Partnership, with a 58 per cent overall satisfaction rating.

More than a quarter of Dorset residents – 29 per cent – said they were not satisfied by the available appointment times, while 30 per cent of Dorset patients said they had to wait for more than 15 minutes after their scheduled appointment before they saw a healthcare professional.

The helpfulness of receptionists was also surveyed, with Dorset GPs polling at 93 per cent being helpful.

In total 58 per cent of Dorset patients said they usually prefer to see a particular doctor, but only 59 per cent see their preferred GP most of the time.

Rob Payne, Dorset CCG head of primary and community care, said: “Overall the results of the survey show Dorset practices scoring consistently above the national average for patient experience.

“Nearly 90 per cent of people described their experience of their GP practice as good which is testament to the ongoing efforts of staff to ensure local people can have access to high quality services, despite the increasing demands that are faced by General Practice.”

"We also recognise that there are variations in patient experience across the county and we are continuing to work with practices to understand the reasons for this and help ensure improvements are made.”
