Come and have a row if you think you're fast enough... Weymouth Dragon Boat Challenge is back.

Now in its 21st year the event is a stalwart of Weymouth Beach, and has raised thousands for charity. The August bank holiday will once again see teams take to the water to paddle it out across the bay, raising money for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

The race was cancelled last year due to bad weather - but organisers at Melcombe Regis Rotary Club say they are delighted to announce that this year's event will go ahead, and are keen to hear from anyone interested in entering a team, as well as businesses wishing to sponsor the Dragon Race.

Ian Pye of Melcombe Regis Rotary Club said: "Following the disappointment of having to cancel last years event due to inclement weather, the Rotary Club of Melcombe Regis is pleased to announce that the 21st charity Dragon Boat Challenge will go ahead this August bank holiday."

The event will take place at the Pavilion end of Weymouth Beach on Sunday August 25 from 10am until 4pm.

A full day of dragon boat racing has been organised with teams set to compete in heats, semi-finals and a grand final.

Organisers said there has been a great deal of support from local businesses and individuals over the years, which has been greatly appreciated.

"This support has helped the club to raise thousands of pounds for various charities", Mr Pye added.

"The Dragon Boats, paddles, safety equipment and instruction are very kindly provided by PGL Adventure Holidays at Osmington. "Residents who have taken part before will know what an enjoyable and fun filled day this is, with many teams wearing fancy dress.

"The Rotary Club of Melcombe Regis is hoping for a full entry of teams, with family, friends and supporters joining in the fun - whilst also raising funds for the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust."

Following the Dragon Boat event, the Rotary Club of Melcombe Regis will be holding its annual charity karting event on Sunday September 1 at Clay Pigeon Raceway near Dorchester.

The event has been running for 26 years and has raised over £60,000 for local charities.
