‘MY son is not a statistic’ – Tina Cooper is determined that the death of her son should not be in vain.

She spoke out after a bid to install greater traffic measures at the junction where he died has fallen short.

Miss Cooper, from Poundbury, is calling for the Duchy of Cornwall to install give-way signs, white lines and greater parking restrictions at the junction of Lower Blakemere Road with Harewood Road.

Her son Richard Hallett sadly died in a motorcycle crash with a van at the junction last September.

Following an inquest, the coroner wrote to the Duchy of Cornwall highlighting some of the issues which could have contributed to the fatal crash, including poor sightlines as a result of parking on the road and the lack of road markings.

The roads in Poundbury remain unadopted by the highways authority at Dorset Council.

A response from the Duchy says that aside from the fatal crash involving Mr Hallett, there have been no other serious occurrences at the site.

A letter from Ben Murphy, Estates Director at the Duchy of Cornwall, said: “I am also assured by Dorset Council and our own Highway Design Consultants having themselves reviewed the accident data for 2014 to 2018 for Poundbury and Dorchester, that there does not appear to be any pattern of clustering of accidents within Poundbury which would suggest that there are not any particular ‘black spots’.

The Duchy has agreed to install two additional parking bollards on each approach, set back from the junction, with the aim of deterring cars from parking immediately by the crossing.

These plans have been submitted to Dorset Council Highways Department for approval.

Despite this, Miss Cooper and her family say they feel let down by the Duchy’s response.

Miss Cooper added: “I’ve lost my son and they seem to be saying that it’s just one person, but one death is too many. I can’t rest because I don’t want another family to go through the devastation we are going through.”

Gary Cooper, Richard’s uncle, said: “It’s like they’re saying it’s only one death, but if five people were killed there then I bet they would start taking notice. It’s not good enough.”

He added: “If they’re going to put bollards there then they might as well put up signs to let drivers know it’s a junction, telling them to give way.

“Drivers won’t take any notice of bollards, all that is saying is - ‘we don’t want people parking outside our property’.”
