FIREFIGHTERS have battled a blaze in a grain silo at a farm in Piddlehinton.

The silo was believed to contain around 30 tonnes of grain according to the fire service. Crews from Dorchester, Weymouth and Yeovil attended.

A spokesman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "We were called around nine this morning to a farm in Piddlehinton following reports of a fire in a grain drier. The silo contained approximately thirty tonnes of grain.

"Two crews from Dorchester, one aerial platform crew from Weymouth and a water carrier from Yeovil attended.

"The fire was extinguished using a hose reel jet and an aqua backpack to allow firefighters to get closer to the flames.

"The fire was out by 12.30pm - what takes time is separating the unaffected grain. It is still too early to pinpoint how much of the grain was destroyed."
