The summer sports programme on Weymouth Beach has been hailed a success by organisers who say around 20,000 people turned up to watch the events.

Weymouth Town Council held a range of sporting events over a period of ten days, including rugby, cricket and swimming.

The programme culminated with the Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic on Sunday, July 28, with more than 21 countries represented and record crowds packing the show court enjoying quality beach volleyball.

Throughout the programme there was blue skies and bright sunshine.

According to the town council, more than 1,000 people participated in activities and competitions including local school children, beach volleyball Olympians, Royal Navy teams and local sports clubs. Sports.

Cllr Graham Winter, Mayor of Weymouth Town Council said: “The sports programme was supported and managed by Weymouth Town Council with the incredible support of an army of local volunteers, event organisers and sports club members. The event also generated funding for a local hospice, gave a heathy boost to the local visitor economy and generated a huge amount of positive publicity for Weymouth. I attended the Beach Volleyball Classic finals which attracted a great crowd creating a fabulous atmosphere and superb showcase spectacle for Weymouth. Many congratulations to all that took part in this great summer of sport on Weymouth Beach.”

Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic directors Peter Bennet and Graeme Sawyer said: “We are both delighted at the success of this year’s championships on Weymouth Beach, the praise from visiting teams and the national association has been superb and made all the effort worthwhile. We would like to express our thanks to Weymouth Town Council and the Weymouth Bid for their support, alongside all of our wonderful team of volunteers from the local volleyball club.
