A CHARITY which helps the young and old in Weymouth is seeking support.

Weymouth Town Charities has a vacancy for a trustee.

The organisation, which incorporates the Sir Samuel Mico and Sir Henry Edwards Charities, would particularly like to hear from anyone with experience in property management and maintenance, finance and investment, and/or social media and publicity.

The board of trustees manages charitable funds dating back to 1666, continuing the work of two town benefactors.

It is split into two groups of charities – The Sir Samuel Mico Charities provide scholarships, educational and development grants to around 100 young people under 25 years of age each year, and The Sir Henry Edwards Charities provides low cost accommodation to elderly people who cannot afford to own or rent a property.

A service is held each year just before Easter to commemorate the life of Sir Samuel, a 17th century merchant who owned many ships which used the port of Weymouth. He bought the George Inn on Custom House Quay, which he left to the trust in his will.

Trustees need to reside, or have occupation or employment in, or special knowledge of Weymouth and Portland. Trustee appointments are normally for a period of five years. The position is honorary and is not paid.

Michael Wheller, one of the trustees, said: ”Being a trustee of Weymouth Town Charities can be summed up as that classic combination of privilege and pleasure.

"It is a privilege to be part of an organisation that has been helping local people for more than 350 years, and it is a pleasure to go on doing so. Whether it is a young person given a leg-up in life or an elderly person found a home, we see in their eyes that we are making a real difference. If you join us, you can see it for yourself.”
