Robert Readman in his letter of August 19 repeats the old mantra that we voted to join the Common Market in 1975.

We did not. We had already joined and the referendum asked if we wished to stay in.

Having disgracefully turned our backs on the Commonwealth by joining, I, like many I suspect, voted to make the best of a bad job and having burnt our boats stay in.

We clearly have not which is why the majority, including me have now voted to Brexit. We have had two referendums. We do not need a third. No one has ever suggested the process will be painless.
