A DORSET-based charity is asking for volunteers to wear its new mascot costume at AFC Bournemouth home games.

Autism Wessex will have their own mascot Fidget, a name suggested by service workers, to accompany Cherry Bear at match held at Dean Court to raise awareness for the charity.

The character is influenced by the book ‘All Cats have Asperger’s Syndrome’, which draws inspiration from the feline world and brings to life familiar characteristics of individuals with Asperger’s, a form of autism.

Tom Johnson, Fundraising Manager at Autism Wessex, said: “The reason why the character has been chosen to be a cat is because we wanted something that represented Autism in a respectful way for people and didn’t show it off in a cartoon and potentially harming way.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to raise awareness for the charity, interacting with kids at the games and experiencing being a mascot.

One of the reasons why we have the mascot is because we have recently become the Junior Cherries’ charity of the year for the 2019/20 season. The charity was voted by Junior Cherries, supporters, club staff and AFC Business members with more than 2,500 votes cast in total.

As well as engaging with the crowd before the game and standing pitch side next to AFC Bournemouth mascot Cherry Bear to watch the match, Fidget will also have his chance to shine and be called upon to save a penalty during the half-time entertainment.

Whilst the charity already have some volunteers, they are looking for new members to help bring Fidget to life.

The charity asks that those willing to take on the role need to be a minimum height of 5 foot 5 inches and of 18 years of age as well as being DBS qualified.

Tom continues: “There are some height restrictions and we need people to be reasonably fit and health because the costume is quite heavy and can get very warm.

“You will be asked to do 20-minute stints with the mask on and there will also be a mentor with you to ensure you are safe.
