WEYMOUTH Carnival may be no more but one west Dorset town showed how it can be done in style.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to enjoy the colourful parade and events of Bridport Carnival.

The town was bright with colour as an array of floats made their way through town, much to the delight of onlookers.

A variety of creative floats lined up on West Street, heading off and making their way up to the town hall and down South Street.

As well as the main parade, there was a range of events happening throughout the day.

The Wessex Military Band impressed the crowds at Bucky Doo Square and a golf competition took place at Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club.

There was plenty for children to do, with numerous crafty events around the town in the afternoon, puppet making at the Lyric Theatre, cupcake decorating at Moore Than Tea in, chocolate decorating at Aleksandras Chocolate Cafe in East Street and face painting by Caroline from Smarty Pants at the Chapel in the Garden.

Bridport Museum also got involved, offering rope making and knot tying.

Following the carnival procession, Mojo performed in Bucky Doo Square, giving the town the chance the night away to rock, reggae, soul and funk covers.

To round off a brilliant carnival weekend, a uniquely ‘Bridport’ event returned on Sunday, crowds of people armed with flames marched from the town centre to West Bay.

The streets shone brightly as the torchlight procession returned, led by Bridport mayor, Cllr Barry Irvine, town crier John Collingwood and this year’s carnival royalty 14-year-old Kaitlyn Wellman, 10-year-old Elsie Hannam and eight-year-old Lily Tancock.

It saw an impressive turnout, with people young and old joining the walk to West Bay where they cast their torches onto a huge bonfire before treated to a spectacular firework display.

As the weather began to take a turn for the worse, rain threatened to scupper plans for the fireworks but, luckily, it just about held off and the display was moved to a field inland rather than off the pier.

Walkers were met at the Bay with some live music from band Mid Life Crisis.

Proceeds from the event go towards local causes.
