A GLASGOW gym owner has been caught running his business without a licence for the last five months.

Pervez Siddique, who owns Fit4Less in Thornliebank, was also convicted of being in supply of cannabis twice in 2015.

The information was revealed at Glasgow City Council’s licensing committee on Thursday when Mr Siddique was brought before the board.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said that in August 2015 Siddique had been fined £130 for being in position of cannabis while driving. At the time officers stopped his vehicle and could detect a strong smell of cannabis.

Just three months later Siddique was fined £250 for being in possession of cannabis while driving over the Kingston Bridge at 50mph. Police confirmed that the drugs were for personal use.

Explaining himself, Mr Siddique, said: “This happened four years ago and it is in the past. I have been running this gym for three years and I am applying to for a new  licence.”

During his testimony it was revealed that the gym has been operating for six months without a licence because Mr Siddique forgot to apply for a renewal.

Members of the committee raised concerns about public health and safety.

Councillor Alex Wilson said: “When you are not licensed you should not be operating. You did not inform us that you not have a licence for the last four or five months.

“You only launched a licence application three months after your last one expired. By doing this you have put lives at risk. I think the running of your establishment is shawdy.”

Following the discussion the majority of councillors decided to grant Mr Siddique a new licence for 12 months and issue a severe warning.
