A NEW pedestrian crossing has been announced for Mount Vernon station after years of campaigning from residents.

The busy junction at the foot of Mount Vernon Avenue has long been identified as a dangerous crossing point, especially by those with young children.

Residents have previously complained that they are taking their lives in their hands when crossing the road.

Glasgow City Council is working in partnership with Sustrans Scotland to progress with the East City Way which aims to connect the area with the city centre.

A consultation on plans to deliver a safer, more comfortable walking and cycling active travel route was completed in October.

The work will be completed in stages. The first phase will see the junction of London Road at Hamilton Road and Mount Vernon Avenue start this year.

Councillor Thomas Kerr said: “After the consultation last year showed an overwhelming support for this project from the local community, I’m delighted at the news that Mount Vernon junction will finally be getting a pedestrian crossing to help deal with the safety concerns that so many residents have raised.

“As well as the pedestrian crossing, I’m pleased that these works will deliver a new cycle route that will extend from the Dog’s Trust at Hamilton Road/Daldowie Road through the Mount Vernon junction and terminate at London Road/London Drive.

“For too long the East End has been neglected when it comes to projects like these and I’m pleased that residents will be allowed the opportunity to choose cycling as a viable form of transport on their way into the city centre.”

It is hoped that the crossing will be completed this year with the junction at the train station redesigned to accommodate a two-way cycle route.

Mr Kerr added: “I’d like to thank both Sustrans and the council officers who have been working in partnership to make this project a reality and also praise the tireless campaigning of Mount Vernon Community Council and the group ‘Give us a pedestrian crossing at Mount Vernon Railway Station’ for raising awareness of this important issue.

“Delivery of this crossing was a key pledge I made during my election campaign and, with construction beginning next spring, it won’t be long until our hard work comes to fruition.”
