EMERGENCY services were called to a paramedic car which burst into flames on Portland yesterday.

It is believed the blaze involved oxygen cylinders in the car.

A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 1.37pm this afternoon a crew from Portland and one from Weymouth were called to Ayton Drive, Portland to reports of a car fire.

"On arrival firefighters found one car well alight and this was extinguished using two sets of breathing apparatus, one hose reel and one main line.

"Colleagues from Dorset Police were requested for traffic control. The fire is believed to have involved oxygen cylinders within the vehicle"

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “Police and fire have been at an incident involving a car fire at Castletown, Portland.

“Luckily everyone involved is safe and well.

“Traffic is now flowing should you need to attend the area, but please take care as the vehicle is still on the roundabout awaiting recovery.”

Police left the scene just before 3pm.
