A lifeboat was launched after reports that a small dinghy had struck rocks and a man was in the water.
The incident happened at Broad Ledge, three quarters of a mile east of Lyme Regis harbour on Thursday.
The sailor was safe and well and was helped ashore by a lifeguard. His dinghy was sailed back to Lyme Regis harbour by a member of the lifeboat crew.
