A huge pile of rock crashed onto a beach after a cliff gave way.

West Bay Coastguard Rescue Team headed to the site, just to the east of Freshwater Holiday Park.

Officers believe the fall took place at some point during Thursday night and as no people are thought to have been involved, the team was then stood down.

They took photographs and grid references which were then passed back to Solent Coastguard for cataloguing.

Back in March, when 1,000 tonnes of rock fell at East Beach, West Bay, geologist Sam Scriven warned the Jurassic Coast's cliffs 'remain totally unpredictable.'

Speaking at the time, he said: "We don’t know when the next fall will be and we could never predict it. There is definitely a relationship between the cliffs and extreme weather."

The coastguard has urged the public to stay safe on the coast this bank holiday weekend but advises, should you find yourself in difficulty or see something which gives you cause for concern, you to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
