A GROUP of school children from Magna Academy in Poole are to host a charity 10 mile walk to raise money for Cancer Research.

The event which will be held on Saturday, September 21, will start at the Sandbanks Ferry at 11am and lead along Bournemouth seafront to Hengistbury Head.

Katie Watson, one of the event’s organisers, has chosen to host the fundraiser in memory of family and friends who have been diagnosed with cancer.

She said: “Many things have prompted me to do this walk and I’m doing not for many different people.

“A few years ago, my mum lost her best friend to cancer and it was devastating. From what I can remember she was funny and kind and lovely to be around.

“Unfortunately, one of our family friends has also been diagnosed with cancer but is getting great treatment and is getting better every day.”

The 14-year-old got inspiration for hosting the event after competing in Cancer Research’s Pretty Muddy 5k in June this year.

“I realised that anyone is capable of raising money you just have to work hard for the people that mean the most to you and your family,” she said.

There will be a £3 entrance fee and there is no time limit as the event will finish when the last finishers complete the w3alk. Certificates will be presented to everyone that takes part at the finish line.

Participants are encouraged to “raise as much money as possible” through sponsorships and final donations can be made on the day. Walkers are asked to collect sponsorships in envelopes with the donators' name and the amount they have donated on a piece of paper inside.

Katie continued: “Anyone can come along and support us by walking. If it’s possible to wear something pink on the day you may write a message you would like people to see about cancer and your story on the back of your clothing.”
