Thirty acres of land currently owned by Dorset Council could soon be handed over to Portland Town Council.

The sites include the island’s skatepark, playing fields at Cheyne Close and Reap Lane, at Grangecroft Road, Fortuneswell, Sweet Hill Lane, West Weares and the nine-acre Grove Road recreation ground.

Other larger parcels of land include the community garden at the rear of Verne Common Road, Portland Cemetery in Weston Road and land at Officer’s Field.

Several small plots of land are also included – among them a site at Brandy Row, land off Rufus Way, Cross Road and at Fancy’s Close. The smallest of the sites, to the front of 41 Chiswell, is just 0.04 of an acre.

Objections are now being sought to the Dorset Council’s disposal of the various parcels of land. These have to be made no later than noon on Monday, September 16.

Portland Town Council, like many other town and parish councils, has been pressing the Dorset Council to transfer land in its area so that it can own and manage the sites.
