A FORMER soldier from Weymouth is setting up a mental health hub especially for men, after overcoming depression and post-traumatic stress.

Dan Ribton, 40, who has spoken openly about his battles with various mental health conditions, is appealing for people to come forward to help find a venue from which he can operate.

With support from other volunteers, the aim is to run support groups and counselling services – and Mr Ribton says he is in an ideal position to connect with others who are battling with mental health.

The group would be for all men from all walks of life who are struggling and need support.

Mr Ribton has been diagnosed with EUPD – previously known as Borderline Personality Disorder – and has been sectioned multiple times under the Mental Health Act, but has found blogging to be cathartic.

It was through his blog that he began the journey towards setting up Weymouth Men In Need Together (MINT) – the name of the hub – after the Yorkshire-based MINT group got in touch. The group aims to help men share with others fighting silent battles.

Mr Ribton said he started writing in February.

His blog - unspokenbattlesuk.com - now has around 13,000 subscribers.

"I just started writing on my personal Facebook and it grew from there," he said.

"Some people didn't realise I was telling the truth - it wasn't until someone asked in the comments whether I was for real.

"I had written that I had been self-harming and trying to kill myself for years. I've been through alcoholism and spent plenty of time in Forston Clinic."

Mr Ribton moved to Wyke Regis a few years ago from Winchester and says he finds it easy to connect with people despite his illnesses. "I get a lot from it", he added.

"Our motto is: Don't man up - speak up.

"I get contacted a lot by wives who tell me they're worried for their husbands. It's up to individuals to approach us, but nine times out of ten, I do receive a phone call or an email. Women are great advocates for mens' mental health in my experience."

Mr Ribton has a team of volunteers behind him and also runs support groups for people who care for others with mental health.

Anyone who can offer a venue can get in touch via Facebook page, @WeymouthMINT, email danribton79@gmail.com or call 07391 050477.
