Fast food restaurant giant KFC has apologised after a customer found an unsightly chicken’s kidney in his takeaway meal.

The food containing the giblet was bought from the KFC restaurant in Jubilee Retail Park in Weymouth.

In its apology, the company said while it is not harmful, the kidney should have been removed while the chicken meal was being prepared.

Sanchez Jansz-Baker, 30, from Portland, was left disgusted after he bit into a chicken thigh and the organ fell out.

He said: “It was horrendous. When I first looked at it I didn’t know what it was, it looked like a brain. It felt all squidgy and horrible.”

Mr Jansz-Baker returned to the restaurant in Weymouth where his partner bought the chicken from to complain.

He said: “I spoke with a friend who suggested I go down there if I wanted to complain. They said it was better to do it now rather than later and to take the chicken with me.”

He said he spoke with the restaurant manager, who told him to contact KFC’s head office with his complaint.

In a response to Mr Jansz-Baker, a representative from the company said: “I’m sorry to hear you found a chicken giblet in your KFC. This looks like the kidney of the chicken and should’ve been removed whilst the chicken was being prepared. We’re very sorry this was not removed.

“I know it’s not much consolation, but because the chicken we use in our restaurants arrives on the bone, sometimes the team can miss a piece of giblet. It’s one of the things with using natural ingredients. Our team all know to double-check for giblets when they’re preparing the chicken but I’m really sort it looks like they missed something this time. I’ll get in touch with our restaurant manager and ask them to remind the team how important those checks are.

“We hope this hasn’t put you off returning to one of our restaurants in the future, we’d love to welcome you back.”

In a statement to the Echo, KFC said: “We’re really sorry to hear about Sanchez’s experience. We have strict procedures in place to ensure our food is served at its best… and although this is a natural part of the chicken and not harmful, it should have been removed.

“We have not received any other similar customer complaints at our Jubilee Retail Park restaurant – that said, we know it doesn’t look great. Our customer care team are looking into it.”
