RESIDENTS are reminded there's an open meeting tonight about Weymouth Carnival – an important step in reviving the big event.

As reported, a discussions have been held to resurrect the carnival in some way after this summer saw the absence of the charity-supporting extravaganza for the first time in its almost 70 year history.

Previous organisers had to back out and attempts by another group to take it on were dashed due to funding issues.

Members of a new group, made up of locally-known fundraisers and individuals including some who have been involved in previous carnivals, say they are “excited about the future” after they began discussions in a bid to bring back this important community tradition, but in a modern format.

Discussions have focused on the overall structure of the event, funding sources and potential dates, with suggestions of a biennial carnival, a replacement town-wide festival and moving the event to a weekend being made.

Now a meeting will be held tonight at 6.30pm at the Top Club, Littlemoor.

Former carnival queen and past event chairman Elysia Jade Munday said: "All who would like to contribute to a potential future event are very welcome to attend. We will have forms to complete and submit for those wishing to be kept updated on opportunities to volunteer or join the committee.

"The meeting will aim to update attendees on present progress, host an ideas session and plan the next steps.

"If anyone who wishes to express interest in joining the committee either as an individual or representative of a group who would love to take on an area of the event but cannot attend, please email ElysiaJMunday@outlook.com."
