Can you lend a hand and help bring history to life?

Volunteers at Weymouth's Nothe Fort run a popular World War II Evacuee Experience for primary schoolchildren who discover what it was like to be an evacuee in the 1940s.

More helpers are needed to ensure this programme can continue.

The fort's marketing manger Steven Booth said: "It involves working with schoolchildren which is extremely rewarding and lots of fun participating in roleplay, as well as a great learning opportunity. The roles include air raid drill, working in the WW2 shop and rationing, 1940s school teacher, WW2 kitchen and home front, and being part of the Weymouth at War experience.

"As many local schools will testify, Nothe Fort’s Evacuee Experience is second to none when it comes to reliving life as an evacuee in the 1940s. Children have a great time engaging in this interactive and learning experience. We know from feedback from the children and teachers how much they enjoy their visits."

Mr Booth added: "Over the years the number of pupils has increased. As the word gets around, we have simply become a victim of our own success and we are struggling to meet demand, thus the reason to appeal for assistance.

"We do not want to lose this valuable educational experience for our schools and the wider community."

Volunteers need no qualifications – but they must enjoy working with children, participating in some roleplay and have a sense of humour.

All volunteers will require DBS clearance and will be given training.
