The public are being given the chance to view and enjoy one of the rarest breeding birds in the UK.

Throughout October, the RSPB is hosting unique bearded tit experiences at Radipole Lake Nature Reserve in Weymouth, giving participants the opportunity to enjoy what the charity describes as a 'fantastic, mustachioed species' up close.

Once brought to the edge of extinction, bearded tit numbers are now soaring with population increases occurring year on year. However, numbers are still low, and the bearded tit is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

The RSPB’s bearded tit experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get near to these incredible birds and learn more about their habitat and behaviour. The events will take place as part of the reserves Wonderful Wildlife Walks, run by leading local wildlife expert, Bob Ford. During the walk, specialist ringer, Steve Hales, will be catching and ringing bearded tits.

RSPB spokesman Beth Markey said: “The Weymouth wetlands provide a lung of pristine environmental excellence. The sites at both Radipole Lake and Lodmoor, maintained in large part through the generosity of the RSPB's membership, are open to the public every day and attract a very wide variety of both migratory and resident wetland bird species.

“At this time of year, the fabled bearded tit colony is in evidence at Radipole Lake reserve. You can spot the males from their fantastic mustachioed plumage – a very wise looking bird indeed. They tend to build their nests deep down in the reeds, so this is a great opportunity to see some and our guides will be more than happy to explain all aspects of wildlife found on the site.

“Wear comfortable footwear and waterproofs. The ground is firm and level, and the going is easy along the wetland’s well-maintained pathway, but we can’t promise glorious sunshine. Even so, bearded tits are certainly worth braving the rain for.”

Walks will take place this Thursday, October 3 and on Thursday, October 10 at 8.15am. The event is £7 for RSPB members and £10 for non-members with a hot drink at the visitor centre included in the price.
