THE first steps in transforming a Rhyl landmark are due to take place this month.

Minor clearing work is expected to start on Rhyl’s Queen’s Market complex in early October.

The clearance of redundant furniture from the former Savoy Hotel has started, while asbestos will be removed from the second floor of the Queen’s Hotel, above the recently closed Fusion nightclub.

Due to the poor condition of the buildings, work is expected to take up to eight weeks and will involve further hoarding and scaffolding being erected.

It is expected the entrance to the market through West Parade will be closed, although access for shoppers will still be open via the High Street and Sussex Street with businesses open as usual.

Denbighshire County Council is working with private sector development partners to consider how best to transform the site into a vibrant mix of retail, food and beverage, contemporary market, office and residential space following an extensive consultation with members of the public.

In April, the first concept art was released by the council for prospective the £30 million transformation.

Further details of proposals for the site are expected to be announced early in November.
