Organisers of the Weymouth Beach Motocross are gearing up for another spectacular event.

The high-flying extravaganza is set to return to the town on Sunday, October 13.

The event sees Weymouth Beach transform into a motocross course, complete with bumps and jumps.

Alf Stearn, Chairman of Purbeck Motocross Club, said: “This is the 26th year that I have helped organise the event in the town and this year we are expecting more than 300 riders.

“We are considered to be the biggest amateur event in the country, which isn’t bad for a little club with around 10 members.”

He said thousands are expected to watch the event.

Mr Stearn added: “Come along, it’s absolutely free, and you will get at least four hours of motocross.”

There will be three classes of riders, including junior, senior and expert.

Each group holds two races and there will be a few professionals taking part on the day.

Although the event is free for spectators, Weymouth and Portland Lions Club, which helps organise the event, will be encouraging people to make charitable donations.

Ryan Hope of Weymouth and Portland Lions Club said: “The main thing for the Lions is that the event raises money for our charity fund, which we give to local good causes.

“The event has a huge benefit to the town in October, which is normally quiet, which is why Weymouth BID have agreed to support us as it helps support local businesses.

“This kick starts all our events, which are held during this time of year, including the senior citizens’ show at the Pavilion and the annual harbour swim.”

Cllr Kevin Brookes of Weymouth Town Council said: “It’s a really good event for this time of year.

“The previous borough council wanted the town to become a year-round resort, and the new town council is no different.

“The more events we can put on at the end of the summer season the better; we had the really successful Ironman event a couple of weeks ago. The beach is absolutely spot on, and if you can organise an event that uses the beach then you’re on to a winner.”

Weymouth Beach Motocross first started in 1984 and has been running every year since.

This year’s event will take place from 12pm on Sunday, October 13 and there will be a demonstration on the Saturday from 3pm.
