WEYMOUTH is one of the best places to visit in the UK this autumn, according to a new study.

The town has been ranked as the ninth best place to visit this season by the website HometoGo.

The Isle of White came out top of the rankings with The New Forest in a close second, proving Dorset has a lot to offer.

Meanwhile, Weymouth beat the likes of Newquay and Falmouth in Cornwall.

The study aimed to find the best locations in the UK for an autumn getaway.

It took into account the average price per night for accommodation, October weather reports and the number of restaurants and family-friendly attractions, which it found through TripAdvisor.

Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Graham Winter, said he’s happy that resort has been noticed as one of the best places to go.

He said: “As a Town Council, we are very proud that Weymouth has once again been recognised as one of the top tourist destinations in the country. The Council works extremely hard to ensure that Weymouth is a welcoming and exciting place for the whole family, no matter what time of the year it is. We were pleased receive recognition as a summer destination earlier in the year, but being noticed as being a great autumn destination too shows that Weymouth truly is a fantastic year round holiday location.

“The autumn is a great time to visit with Beach Motocross, Halloween events and Firework Night on the beach to name a few of the exciting attractions.”

Claudia Moore, Chief Operations Officer of Weymouth BID, also welcomed the study and said the town has a lot to offer this season.

She said: “It is no surprise that Weymouth has rated so highly – we have so many aspects that are attractive all year round such as our historical sites. We also have many exciting and varied events coming up such as Motocross, Halloween markets and OctoberFest.”

A spokesman for HomeToGo said: “At HomeToGo, our search data shows that this Autumn, more and more Brits are opting for a holiday on home soil. To avoid any potential disruption and fluctuations in currency, families are playing it safe by swapping international travel for tried-and-tested destinations right here in the UK. Fortunately, there is plenty to enjoy right here on Great Britain’s green-and-pleasant lands.”
