The father of a young boy with an incurable muscle-wasting condition is encouraging people to join in a national bake sale for charity.

Sammy De Laszlo, aged 10, was diagnosed with Duschenne Muscular Dystrophy more than seven years ago.

After finding out about the illness, Sammy’s parents Oliver and Tricia De Laszlo decided to start a nationwide campaign called Bake A Difference.

The campaign coincides with National Baking Week and aims to raise as much money as possible for Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Mr De Laszlo said: “Sammy would love to be like any other 10-year-old, he would love to be able to chase his friends or his older brother Thomas in the park or even walk up the stairs at home to keep up with his brother.

“But hiding underneath his adorable cheeky smile lies a severe muscle-wasting condition.

“Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is an incurable genetic disorder that affects children around the world.

“One in 3,500 boys is born with it and in the UK there are 2,500 children living with the illness.”

People that suffer from the condition can't produce dystrophin, a protein you need to build up your muscles. As a result, every muscle in the body deteriorates, and they can become wheelchair bound by as early as 9-years-old.

Money raised from Bake a Difference will go towards raising awareness and funds for medical research.

Mr De Laszlo added: “Bake a Difference is back and this year it’s bigger than ever! Everyone loves baking and eating cakes, so we thought of doing something that schools, families, local communities and workplaces can enjoy and at the same time raise awareness and funds for medical research. Every year we try to make it better, build on our continued success of previous years as we are hugely proud of it.

“This year we are hosting it during National Baking Week 15th – 21st October 21019, and we want you to join in the fun with Sammy to help fight muscle wasting conditions!”

Although Mr De Laszlo and his family are based in the South East they regularly visit Weymouth.

Sammy’s grandparents lived in Weymouth before they died and the family have visited Weymouth Carnival in the past and have many friends there.
