A MAN reportedly hit a woman before chasing her down a street and stealing her purse.

Police said at around 12.40pm on Sunday, a man approached a woman on King Street in Weymouth and shouted abuse at her before hitting her face.

Officers say the man and woman were known to each other.

The woman - who is local and aged in her 30s - ran towards Park Street where the man allegedly chased her and took her purse from her handbag.

The purse contained cash and a bank card.

A 42-year-old Weymouth man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery as is assisting detectives with their enquiries.

Detective Constable Jeremy Cuff, of Weymouth CID, said: “I am appealing to anyone who was in the area and may have witnessed the incident, or captured it on CCTV or dashcam footage, to get in touch.”
