A cat was rescued by firefighters following a house fire in Dorchester.

The incident happened shortly after 11am this morning.

Fire crews from Dorchester and Weymouth were initially called to a house fire in Damers Road.

A spokesman for Dorchester Fire Station said: “Upon arrival it was evident there was smoke issuing but reports of the fire being already extinguished.

“One breathing apparatus crew (BA) were tasked to confirm the fire was out before ventilating the property.

“At this point the resident informed us of a missing cat. The BA team then prioritised a search for the cat, whilst confirming the fire was out.”

Firefighters entered the ‘smoke logged’ property and managed to rescue the cat, which was given oxygen therapy thanks to equipment donated to the fire service by Smokey Paws Charity.

The fire spokesman added: “We’re happy to say the cat is now fine and once the flat was ventilated and the cause of fire was determined, isolated and removed, we made our way back to home station.”
