If Mr Jones (Letters October 14) had done any research, he would find a wealth of information on www.dorsetflag.co.uk or even Wikipedia. The colours weren't chosen at random, they have historic symbolic links to the county. I won't go into that here, it can be researched in the above links.

The Dorset flag was democratically voted, following a campaign and competition in 2009. There was no previous flag (no, the Dorset county council flag is NOT the flag of Dorset, just the council). It was covered in detail by the Dorset Echo, Wessex FM and even covered on television. The national Flag Institute was heavily involved and advised. Those who selected the final flags to be voted were made up of a cross section of Dorset peoples.

Does Mr Jones understand the deep history of the county and why a saint like St Wite would be relevant? (Not that the flag is representative of St Wite, just suggested). At least she remains relevant to the area, unlike say, St George, who defeated "dragons" (in Turkey and never stepped foot here nonetheless). On that note, does this English flag represent milk and some strange red cross?!?! Perhaps we need a new English flag!

If Mr Jones wants to start a new flag campaign for Dorset, so be it - but it would be a massive slap in the face of the hard work of the many people who were involved in getting it there and the many people who now fly the flag.
