AN outline application for a house and eight apartments off Elm Close, Weymouth has been withdrawn.

The planning application, for a plot south east of the close, was first submitted in January to local planners. It attracted nine formal objections, all of them against the proposal.

Among the claims were that the ground is water-logged and unsuitable for housing; that access to the site, if building were to be allowed, would have to be via Melstock Avenue from the Preston Road, which one objector said was an unsuitable route; that the proposed building would be considerably taller and overlook existing homes and that the design was out of keeping with surrounding buildings.

Others were concerns about the possible loss of trees and the effect on wildlife in the area, being adjacent to the country park.

No reason has been made public by Dorset Council for the application being withdrawn.
