DID you hear the peal of thunder that woke many residents across the conurbation last night?

The sound woke those living in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, while in Wimborne, the roof of a home in Leigh Road was hit by lightning.

Firefighters were called to the address just before 11.40pm. Crews from Wimborne found some smoke logging to the roof space, but no fire.

The moment the bolt hit was captured in video sent to us by Charlotte Mercer. She said the noise "sounded like a bomb exploding" and it even set off car alarms.

There was a short but very intense lightning storm shortly before midnight, with residents discussing the event on social media saying the thunder sounded like an "explosion".

More rain has been predicted for today.

This morning, it was forecast to be fairly dramatic at around 2pm, with lightning and 'thunder showers' anticipated, although currently it appears to be settled outside.

Luckily the weather looks set to improve this weekend, with highs of 14c and lots of sunshine predicted.
