Chris Cherry’s complaint regarding the actions of his MP (October 10) highlights a common misunderstanding of our democracy.

MPs are elected as representatives of their electorate, not as delegates.

There are many MPs now who, having found out the truth about what Brexit will mean, are voting to protect their electorate from the chaos and damage it will cause.

What I find incredible is that, after three-and-a-half years, now that we know that the referendum was fought on a tissue of lies, with serious questions of financial malpractice, and at odds with the rules of all other European referenda, we are still not allowed to re-appraise our position on the merits of Brexit - even though we all now know much more about the risks and inevitable costs. But still we are being denied a validating vote on any course of action.

The Government, however, without any democratic mandate, is now on its third Prime Minister. So the ‘fewer than 200,000’ Tory members are allowed a second and third vote on who the Prime Minister should be.

Surely it is now the time to wrest the power back from the ‘Bullingdon Boys’ and the ‘Hooray Henrys’ and embrace real democracy.

P.S. Bridport voted to remain first time round.
