A fundraising group’s annual swimming competition has been hailed a success after more than £3,500 has been raised.

Bridport Lions Club held its 26th annual Swimarathon at Bridport Leisure Centre this month, with 29 teams - including six primary schools - battling to see how many laps they could swim in 55 minutes.

The record of 111 laps was broken by senior team, Barracudas Sharks, after they managed 112 laps.

Monies pledged on the day exceeded £3,600.

Prizes for laps swum, sponsorship raised and outstanding effort will be given at a presentation evening at Highlands End Holiday Park on October 21.

President Lucy Paull said: “This, our primary event, takes place with the support of local businesses who sponsor us to cover costs. In this way, al monies raised by the swimmers goes to our charity fund for use in the community.”
