Fed-up residents are coming together to stand up to yobs who targeted cars, property and community facilities in Weymouth.

Councillors Christine James and Alex Fuhrmann have organised a meeting tomorrow for residents to discuss potential culprits with the police.

Multiple vehicles and fences on roads in Westham were damaged during a vandalism spree earlier this month.

In a separate incident, hundreds of pounds worth of damage was also caused to Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC) and All Sorts First Steps pre-school at Knightsdale Road.

Cllr Christine James said: "Residents are concerned that there's not enough evidence to prosecute anyone.

"It's a bit steep considering the amount of damage – people are fed up.

"The yobs responsible have overstepped the mark.

"The meeting is about finding out who did this and seeing if we can put the finger on someone."

The meeting is being held tomorrow, Friday, October 25 at 7pm, at Westham Methodist Church, accessed via Milton Road.

Cllr James added, "It's not about police-bashing - however if so many resources weren't spent down at the seafront perhaps things would be dealt with a lot better."

Cllr Alex Fuhrmann said potential offenders have been identified within the community.

"Some of the same names keep popping up," he said.

"I will always be in favour of prevention over punishment, however we are clearly at a point where the line has been crossed and further action is demanded.

"I'm hoping that Friday's meeting will give a platform to express those concerns face-to-face, and for Dorset Police, Weymouth community safety officers and councillors to unite and find a way in which we can all feel positive about moving forward."

Cllr Fuhrmann also spoke out to encourage residents who have been discussing the issue on social media to attend.

"If you really are passionate about making a change in the community you must attend events such as these," he added.

Inspector Barry Gosling of the Weymouth and Portland Neighbourhood Policing Team is due to attend on Friday.

“The matters reported are the subject of thorough investigations that are ongoing and a number of open lines of enquiry are being progressed," he said.

“We are committed to policing the whole of the Weymouth and Portland area and, while resources will continue to be focussed on areas where it is proven that the majority of offences occur, this does not mean we neglect other areas.

“We will continue to patrol all areas where we are made aware of repeated crime patterns and all matters reported to us will be the subject of an appropriate investigation.

“We are always grateful for information received from members of the public in relation to crime and anti-social behaviour. Anyone with information is asked to report it online at www.dorset.police.uk, via email 101@dorset.pnn.police.uk or by calling 101.”
