A WEYMOUTH legend, known as Britain's oldest footballer, has stepped up his search for a new club by scoring against a former England goalkeeper.

Dickie Borthwick, 83, has been searching for a new team to play for since his previous side, Wyke Rangers Veterans, folded two years ago.

As news of his free agency spread, Dickie started to get offers from lots of teams and even appeared on ITV's This Morning with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

Speaking of this experience, Dickie said: "It was a great day out. They checked me into a lovely hotel, laid on taxis for me and treated me like a king, it's nice to be treated like that. Everyone in the studio were lovely and they seemed to really enjoy it.

During the show, Dickie had three chances to score a penalty against former England goalkeeper and Strictly Come Dancing star David James.

"I was getting worried that I wasn't going to get something past him because I missed the first one," he said. "The goals were so small they were hockey goals.

"On the third one I wanted to show I could kick with both feet so I switched to my left to bamboozle him a bit. I managed to score and he said it was a good goal."

After the show, Dickie received a signed England shirt from the shot stopper which read: 'To Dickie, good luck with finding a new club, great goal!!!'

The veteran was delighted and said: "Thank you David James for your jersey and your friendship."

Dickie, who turns 84 later this month, has not played since last lacing up for Portland Town Veterans two years ago and he is hoping to find a new club while he still can.

"I have had lots of offers from all over the place," he said. "The latest one was from Ramsgate but that's a bit far for me.

"I have also had offers from other countries like Malta, Turkey, Indonesia and Italy. I'm waiting because I'm looking for a local one. Something will turn up.

"I haven't played in two years but I still feel fit and I've been keeping myself in good shape.

"I take it 90 minutes at a time. If I feel ok the day after playing a game then I know I'm still fit enough."
