HUNDREDS of islanders gathered at the cenotaph on Portland for a special service.

Prior to the service, dignitaries led a procession from the Drill Hall up to Portland Heights Hotel.

Residents then gathered at the war memorial, which overlooks the borough.

Revd Tim Gomm welcomed everyone to the service and thanked them for an ‘amazing turnout’.

Meanwhile Revd James Menzies, Team Vicar of Portland, said: “Let us remember before God and commend to His keeping; those who have died for their country in war; those whom we knew, and whose memory we treasure; and all who have lived and died in the service of mankind.”

The service culminated with wreath laying at the cenotaph, led by the Mayor of Portland, Cllr Susan Cocking.

Speaking after the service, Cllr Cocking said: “We are grateful to those who gave their lives for us.

“The community of Portland always turn out and does an amazing job of supporting us and remembering all the people who served during the war.”

“Without those people we would not stand here having the freedom of speech we enjoy today.”

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sandy West said: “I was crying during the service it was absolutely wonderful I have never seen so many people and I’ve been doing this for the last 52 years.

“My heart was coming out of my chest.”
