Police had to have a few strong words with a delivery driver who parked his van over a pedestrian crossing in Wareham.

On Saturday evening Dorset Police's dedicated 'No Excuse' road safety team was in the Wareham area when they saw a delivery van completely blocking a pedestrian crossing on North Street so that it could not be used safely.

The delivery driver was found nearby but police say he initially refused to move his vehicle as he wanted to complete his delivery.

A spokesperson for the team said: "Strong words of advice were given and he moved it a short distance away. He was then issued with a fixed penalty notice with a recommendation he completes a driver awareness course.

"This offence can be dealt with by way of fixed penalty (three points and a £100 fine) or an educational course. We prefer the educational option but every case is different.

"Hopefully this driver will think twice about others and park safely in the future."
