Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is teaming up with other groups to back National Road Safety Week.

This road safety awareness week will run from November 18 to November 24, and will feature a number of events designed to highlight road safety issues.

The fire service, which already plays a part in Wiltshire & Swindon Road Safety Partnership and Dorset Road Safe, will be involved with the Safe Drive Stay Alive and Survive the Drive roadshows.

Christine Sharma, road safety manager at Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "National Road Safety Week is a great opportunity to consider all of the risks to drivers, rather than focusing on one specific issue. Everyone has a responsibility for road safety, whether they are a driver or a passenger, and our education programme is designed to bring that home as effectively as possible."

The presentations over the week aim to target as many as 4,200 people.

The Safe Drive Stay Alive shows will offer personal accounts and footage of road traffic collisions to show audiences the extent of the damage that can be caused.

All sorts of people who have been involved in road traffic collisions, including firefighters, medics, police officers, bereaved parents, will also share their stories and experiences of these often tragic incidents.

There will be two shows in Weymouth Pavilion on Monday, November 18 aimed at local year 11 students.

There will also be the Survive the Drive shows, which are aimed at defence personnel. Vehicle-related collisions are, according to statistics, the second largest cause of non-operational deaths and injuries throughout the Ministry of Defence apart from training incidents.

This show will feature in Dorset at Blandford Camp on Wednesday, November 20.

National Road Safety Week occurs annually, and is organised by the road safety charity Brake. It was started in 1997 to help raise awareness for road safety issues. More information about the awareness week and the work of Brake can be found at roadsafetyweek.org.uk
