Environmentalists will stage a protest in Dorchester as part of a global climate strike.

Hundreds of protests will take place around the world tomorrow with people both young and old calling for greater action to tackle the climate emergency.

In Dorset, the council declared a climate emergency in May, but Extinction Rebellion – the group organising the upcoming protest in the county town – is asking “where are the policies for change?”

It says that six months have passed since the motion to declare a climate emergency, but claims Dorset Council has little to show for it.

A spokesman for Extinction Rebellion Dorchester and Weymouth said: “We welcome the decision by Dorset Council to declare a climate emergency but asks “where are the policies for change?” Six months after the council’s emergency decision we await concrete measures.”

The group is calling on the council to ban further extraction of fossil fuels in Dorset; enact a green energy strategy and a policy for green jobs; provide reliable, cheap public transport.

It also has concerns about rising sea levels and the impact this could have on towns, including Weymouth.

A spokesman said: “New maps show the impact of sea-level rise across the world. Without effective measures, by 2050 many cities will be swamped by rising seas. In Dorset, much of Weymouth, Poole, Wareham and Bridport will be inundated; Portland will again be a true island; Chesil Beach will be breached; the coast from Wyke to West Bay will be below today’s annual flood levels.”

The protest will take place in Dorchester at midday at the Town Pump in South Street.

The spokesman added: “Our climate is on fire. We face a climate and ecological emergency: sea-level rise, desertification, wildfires, water shortage, crop failure, extreme weather, and massive loss of animals, plants and insects across the planet.

“Friday, November 29 sees a Global Climate Strike, with hundreds of protests against inaction by governments worldwide. Young people are taking the lead with school strikes and walkouts. In Dorchester, protestors will be meeting at the Town Pump, Cornhill at midday: all are welcome to attend and express their views.

“Join us on Friday in Dorchester to make our voices heard.”
