A group that has made a ‘huge contribution’ to the history of the town has closed after 102 years.

Bridport WI closed its doors this month, combining members’ last meeting with a Christmas party at the WI Hall in North Street.

The group invited guests from the town council, including Bridport mayor, Cllr Barry Irvine, and enjoyed entertainment, followed by a buffet lunch as well as singing ‘Jerusalem’ for a final time.

Bridport WI was set up in 1917, with Eileen Ursula Holden as the group’s first president and Mrs Deveuish as the vice president. However, members met for a final time after struggling to attract more members.

President Veronica Smith said: “One hundred and two years is a long time and this WI has made a huge contribution to the history of Bridport. However, it is a countrywide problem.

“In order to survive, the WI has been encouraging younger women to join them or set up their own WIs. These women have embraced and grown up with technology, which can change by the day.

“What the WI is in danger of doing is alienating the older generation who religiously stick to the rules and regulations but cannot keep up with technology. Their interests may not be the same and sometimes their physical fitness precludes them from participating in organising or raising funds for their WI to survive.

“Retired women make up the majority of WIs that meet during the day. This has led to dwindling numbers that are not being replaced, making them financially unviable. This is happening to many WIs in this country.

“My hope is that Bridport WI members will stay in touch with each other so that no one living alone becomes lonely and isolated.”
