A man has been left with serious injuries following an assault.
Dorset Police were called by the ambulance service shortly after 6.30pm on Saturday to a report a man had been found with injuries after being assaulted at an address in Hamilton Place, off South Street in Bridport.
Police say his injuries are believed to be serious but not life-threatening.
It was reported that two men involved in the incident had subsequently left the scene.
Officers attended and carried out searches of the area.
There was a major police presence in the town centre. Armed officers were seen while the police helicopter circled the area.
Dorset Police said on Saturday night that a 53-year-old local man was arrested in the area of South Street on suspicion of wounding with intent and is assisting officers with their enquiries.
