THE demolition of a garage, replacing it with two homes on a site at Fortuneswell, Portland, has been refused by Dorset Council.

Planning officers decided the site at 1A Belle Vue Terrace, if developed, would be out of keeping with surrounding buildings, would be an overdevelopment of the site and would cause significant harm to the area. The site is behind the listed Britannia Inn.

A report said the proposed building plot was within the Underhill conservation area with the proposed homes behind each other, one accessed off Belle Vue Terrace and the other with pedestrian only access via a track from Fortuneswell, showing no dedicated parking in an amended plan.

Portland Town Council was among the objectors, supporting comments from the Conservation Officer about overdevelopment and the loss of green space.

Six letter of objection were received by Dorset Council raising concerns about overdevelopment, poor vehicle access, loss of mature trees, loss of light and overshadowing to 15 Fortuneswell and loss of privacy for other neighbours.
